Impossible is just a state of mind!

How about you? How are your resolutions going? Are you continuing down your chosen path? Or is your confidence fading? After two weeks doubt can start creeping into the thoughts. “The first week was great! But this week I don’t feel so good,” are normal. Like all great achievements, there is a weeding-out period. The weak must be separated from the strong. The “wheat from the chaff“.

So today I would like to appeal to your pride. Yes, step aside for a moment and let me talk to your ego.

Ok Mr. pride and Ms. ego, now that we’re alone, let me ask you!. What would it mean to you to be one of the few who makes it? What if the goal you have chosen is difficult, so difficult most people quit after two weeks, but you keep going? What does that say about you? Doesn’t that mean you are stronger than most?

And what about the negative thoughts that weed their way in? Can’t they motivate you even more? You could choose instead to welcome all the negative thoughts into your head. The more the merrier. Yes, let them all in as long as you do one simple task….show up and work your plan.

Look at it this way. You might think “this goal is impossible!” But if you simply show up and keep going, you will be doing the impossible. Again, what does that say about you? It might say you “chew up impossibilities and eat them for breakfast.” The negative challenges are part of the process – part of your life story.

What if there were no negative thoughts, no challenges? I’ll tell you…nobody will ever read your book! Nobody wants to read a book about how you climbed Mount Everest with the greatest of ease. “It wasn’t even cold” you say. “The air was fresh and clear..we even had a picnic on the top.” Makes for a boring story doesn’t it?

The challenges we inevitably face are part of our life stories. We can even learn to appreciate them as necessary to well-rounded success. We can record them in our journals, blogs, videos and tell them to our grandkids one day. So let the negativity come and make a note of it as you continue down your path. Your grandkids will thank you for it.

The Apprenticeship Of Hairdressing

Students embarking on a career in hairdressing are often quite anxious to skip the prelims and jump into the inventive part of the course. In this exceptional career, not placing the emphasis on the fundamental principles can only lead to catastrophe. Making major mistakes when it comes to hair does not allow for easy camouflage. The basic principles including learning texture, shape and balance. These are the fundamentals of any great hairstyle and then it leads to a little more creativity in the pattern creation. Proportions are elements that the upcoming hairstylist must be come adept at as well. They must be able to use their sense of opinion. Often the pupil is oblivious that there are basic techniques that must be mastered when it comes to the tools of the trade. These are blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners just to name a few. A student in hairdressing must learn to adapt solid study habits, patience and endurance. As we mentioned there isn’t much of a allowance for mistakes when it comes to the hair. They must also learn to be observant and prepared to stay attuned to the world of fashion. In many cases, they complement each other.

Three Apprenticeships I went through and all were a life experience. These three gentlemen had a different knack to what they did, and hopefully the students who come out of the hairdressing schools will please appreciate the value of learning under a Master. Though there are not any Degrees in my profession that will give you the level of Master. When you apply for the stewardship you will be able to tell immediately if it is a good fit for you!

ENTHUSIASM – DETERMINATION – ATTITUDE – RELATIONSHIPS

In all the years I’ve been in the salon, teaching, and mentoring: I’ve observed those who have been successful and those who have missed the mark. I discovered with all of my years in my profession that there are several key elements – or ‘RULES TO LIVE BY” that ring true to being successful in your profession.

1. ENTHUSIASM – Have a true passion for what you do and truely believe in the workmanship and the products you use to perform your craft. Before you sell to a customer anything, you have to sell the person on YOU!!!
You are the first thing they will “buy” before making a purchase.

2 Determination – Winston Churchill’s greates speech was, “never, never, never, never give up!” Be determined to not throw in the towel when things get tough. Remember the overnight sensation is the exception and not the Rule.
Be patient, and persistent. Find a way to make it happen when you reach obstacles. Go around, over, under or through to reach your goals.

3. Attitude – You can do everything wrong and win with the right attitude! Learn to roll with punches when things don’t go the way you think they should. Prepare for all the PEAKS and Valleys. Learn to laugh at yourself and don’t beat yourself up for your mistakes. Embrace your mistakes. Learn from them and move on. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it – sometimes doing it all by yourself is not the way to go.

4. Relationships – People like to do business with the peopl they like!! This is a big one. Get to know your clients and what they value. Treat people as if they have a invisble sign around their the neck saying “MAKE ME FEEL IMPORTANT” Building relationships is SO key in giving you repeat business and building customer loyality. Remember that it costs more money to get a new customer than to keep one you already have.
