Motivation? I think not. Merely a guide to jump into life! Follow your own path. Not a industry that all they want is to sell, sell. More to life!
We all need a good idea once and awhile.
Motivation? I think not. Merely a guide to jump into life! Follow your own path. Not a industry that all they want is to sell, sell. More to life!
So many people in my beauty industry have so much to say about being a suite or booth renter. To me it give the individual the chance to see if they can make it on there on. When doing commission based employment there is no funds for down time. Such as a hourly wage, you are told to clean, answer phones, stock shelves etc. And do you get paid? NO! So I feel there should be a wage for all cosmetologists in this arena. But as time goes on the same idea of commission still try’s to linger on in the industry. It is a simple way to get free labor from professionals in the industry. With out worrying about compensation to there employee’s. That is changing in California a law is being passed where a hairdresser or nail tech etc. Will have to get the state minimum wage which will be mandatory. I say AMEN to that.
Professionals coming out of school are no longer naive to the old customs of employment. And I know a few academy’s out there educate there students on “What to look out for”. Being your own “BOSS” is good for all. Living someones else’s dream and funding there retirement is now for the birds, the industry professionals have “AWOKEN”. Team work is what they will say but basically ‘YOU’, are just making them more profitable. I say take the risk and go for it. Your hard work will pay the bills and make you successful. When you work on commission you have to go to work and worry about how your bills will be paid. And then come to think of it how can you concentrate on what you are doing. How do I pay my rent, medical, food, car? Any thoughts?
Time fly’s by and there is change and if you don’t change you will remain stagnate in your life and profession. So many professionals I have worked with have so many talents that I often wonder why they just do hairdressing? Time will be the ultimate judge for all of us. And we may ask ourselves why do we work for others, why do we live for others dreams? When we all are born with special gifts. Special talents. And in our own rights they are individual.
I have always been a team player and as time has gone by I have learned to look out for what is ‘Best For Me”. Not in a selfish sense but to have new experiences and not play “Follow The Leader”. I have never been such as one, and the only time I was is when I was in Naval Service. So I say to you why don’t you just take a risk, a risk in pushing yourself into a place where you are uncomfortable to learn anew. They only way of getting enlightenment is going on a path of your own. No one else’s. So moving forward can be scary but learning and doing what you have never done will create a new vision for you. YOU WILL EDUCATE YOURSELF. A Education money cannot buy or a college class that cannot be offered. I say to you let the past stay there and forge ahead with your dreams, and don’t let a industry say you cant make it. Go for it.
Think about it! You could write a book, make educational video’s, keep people abreast on what is going on with your business, offer class’s, tutor, you could learn to sell your self and not someone’s else’s idea’s. Follow your own path is the point I am making. Don’t listen to others in your industry. Fear is the main problem with us, a lot of times when I was making my documentary’s, I would think about scripting and continuity, film locations and a timeline. I was scared and had only so much to spend. But taking little bites here and there and surrounding myself with people who new more than me about the ideas, I wanted to do was a very interesting learning process. So I say to you it’s all about FEAR. That will stop you. Also a big EGO will stop you. Stay with your idea and you will see growth in what your doing and trying to accomplish. Don’t be scared. The funds will also come in time. And the project will let you know when it is finished. NOT YOU. GO FOR IT MY FRIENDS.
Best Regards
Joseph Kellner
Take Pride on how you present yourself. When you give your first impression it is very important. Set a example in your surroundings. Only you are responsible of how you want to be visually perceived. Pressed shirts, Blouses, Trousers, Shined Shoes, Hair, Trimmed or Polished Nails, Tattoos, Jewelry are all areas people or your clients will perceive you. Customers will measure you initially by your outward presentation. Remember our profession is a art and craft. You need to express your own individualism.
Certain age groups you will attract by your appearance and also your age too.
When you do not use your talents where you are employed, or as a salon owner, or studio artist. You need to find a area where you can. You cannot spend hard earned money on schooling or advanced education. To come back to a atmosphere where you cannot utilize your skills. It is your responsibility to find your niche.
Your journey in life is very personnel and important. Do not let the others influence you. Fly straight and on your OWN course. There will be changes, but without these changes there will be no fun in the adventure.
If you feel professionally you are weak at some points, take charge of your weaknesses. Always try to strive for perfection in what you are doing. Practice is the key. Also practice will give you all the answers. Take control of your fears. It is only you holding your back.
This was from a Facebook article that I joined in and here is the problem.
Hello,
My name is Joe and I am trying to get some advice for my wife who is way too nice. So a quick run down on the events.
My wife has worked at a spa for approximately 3-4 years before quitting for another spa. She was paid commissions of 50% and also had a $20 a month so call “booth rental”. She files a 1099 and pays all her own taxes. She was always asked to make trips to get products and called in for meetings but never compensated for her time. All products were supplied by the spa.
So upon my wife advising the owner that she was quitting because lack of steady business and comments regarding closing the hair side of the spa down, my wife was advised that she is not to contact any clients and that if she did so, she would take legal action. Please note that there was no contract of any kind signed. So my wife sent out a text and card to all of the clients that she has worked on just saying she had relocated and if they would like to schedule an appointment to please contact her. Apparently one of the clients brought in the card to the old owner and my wife was sent another text saying this is her last warning.
The very next day, one of my wife’s friends/clients that she has been doing for a long time called her to make an appointment and advised that she had received an email from the old salon stating that My wife was no longer employed at the salon and that she is offering all clients a 50% discount off of hair and free partial facial.
I personally feel that this is a low blow seeing how my wife did not stoop to that level and only sent out a card saying she had relocated. Is there anything that can be done to my wife for sending the cards or any advice you can give on how we should respond to the owners threats?
I appreciate everyone’s time and look forward to your responses.
The concerned husband,
Joe
These are some of the comments contributed by fellow professionals.
“The salon and your wife don’t own clients they get to decide for themselves. The old owner is all bark no bite”
“She should count her losses and move on. The clients who are loyal will follow her. It’s useless to fight with unreasonable people and it sounds as though her former employer is clueless. She’s not under a contract so your wife can contact whomever she pleases, the consumer will make a choice.”
“There was nothing written in contract, and actually, the employer can get in deep trouble for charging rent AND being considered having an employee. You can’t be both. It’s too gray- she was not paying your wife’s employment tax, yet treating her like an employee. Legally, your wife would have been responsible for everything, supplies etc. she charged her rent to get past paying her employees taxes/minimum wage. Of course the owner wanted to try to retain the clients but since there was no non compete….. id tell your wife to tell her former salon that if she doesn’t stop harassing her, she will report them for unfair labor practices.”
“All you need to do is tell the old salon owner that you will be filing an SS-8 with the IRS to determine if your wife was in fact an commissions or a booth renter and if it’s found that your wife was an employee, then the salon owner will be responsible for back taxes AND will most likely be fined by the IRS for tax’s. You may share this website for verification to the salon owner so she doesn’t think you aren’t meaning business. Whether you actually do it or not is up to you. It appear as if your wife has been classified and you probably should file. You won’t need a lawyer if you get the IRS involved. You can also file with your state’s labor relations board. They aren’t quite as effective as the IRS, though. This is serious business with the IRS. They do not like to be fooled by the tax payers! As someone who has had to deal with them over an unemployment insurance issue, trust me…they have no mercy! (I’m all legit now! I pleaded no knowledge and they let me get away with it once! I had to pay a pretty stiff fine, though!) Don’t be afraid to let the salon owner know that you aren’t afraid to call the IRS. Quite honestly, your wife should not have had to pay taxes all these years.”
SAD!!!
This is the Beauty/Cosmetic Industry. If no contracts were signed she has every right to contact the client. Also the owner has every right also. If the harassment continues from the owner such as the emails stated. Please acquire a cease and desist order against her. And then enjoy your lives. These tactics from the owner are ol school tactics of intimidation. But the owner has every right also just like the employee to keep the business. Since she provide the clients to your loved one. Two way street, this is beauty business and this is how it goes. Its like a whores business, Pimp and Prostitute. It will never change. sir. Primitive industry. Good days, really? It is a lovely craft, but after making 2 documentary’s of the industry. Nothing has changed. Its a free for all. Yes the only way of changing the industry is being a mentor and a role model. Many good MEN and WOMEN are used in this industry. You are really seeing the corporate slavery now. It is hard for all the youngsters coming out to make a living. On the payroll percentages corporations and independent owners are paying. So many professionals I see are taken advantage of. All for GREED, Disgusting. I don’t see this profession as a viable form of income. Anymore. Unless you are with a Union or the Film/Entertainment Industry. But I love the craft you can always keep learning. I like craft more now since I do makeup and photography and films. You can really learn a lot combining the three crafts. I now just concentrate on the craft. I no longer friend people in the industry. I have found out anyone can be anyone on the internet. So I surround myself with like minded people and stay away from the so called “Stars”. Internet stars that is! lololol
A few weeks ago I came across a dossier in one of my Facebook’s friends profile. And on this profile there was a comments left about other hair dressers work. I have been in this industry for over 29 years and by no means am I a judge or critic of someone else’s work or craft. Especially when I have to keep up my own style of hair coloring, hair design or makeup. There is no way to me for anyone to call themselves a master in the art of hairdressing when it is consistently changing and evolving. Nor are we able to comment on anyone’s work when they are the artist. Do we know what is going through their minds, no we don’t. But on this profile the “Older generation had to put their two cents in”. Which I think you need to watch out for in this industry the older generation will sell their souls for a chance to get up on a stage to live off the names of dead men. While in the mean time they will offer you a technique on “Dry Haircutting” and a bottle of “SUDS” and tell you it’s the latest and greatest. “It’s going to change the industry”. Those words were spoken by a man who told me he did all of Vidal Sassoon’s haircuts back in the 50″s. These are your old used cars salesmen of the industry. They will say anything to just catch a fleeting moment of their past, the “Glory Days”, while they have not done anything in the past 30 years. Other than open their wallets to receive a few penny’s from a manufacture for speaking their script. And if you take a look at their work they are quick to “PAT” themselves on the back and tell you your shit sticks. They have a group and will only pay you a tribute if you do a “VS” hair style. They will paint a picture of how crappie the new generation work is not up to “THERE PAR”. They are quick to judge others. While their work still has not progressed since the 1980″s. A wise tongue and a giving heart goes along way in the beauty industry
I do a lot of photo-shoots every month and all year-long. When I am hired, I am told how to style the hair, how to do the makeup. That’s the story, and that is how I get paid. Kapish?
The above hair style and hair design was done by a stylist, who I don’t know my friends. The comments said from fellow hairdressers were as follows.
Ian ‘Gav’ Gavet – We are allowing mediocrity to become a legitimate norm… not good.”
Jim Rondeau – That picture is beauty school. …… and the looser at that !
Cyrus Bulsara – Messy hair and disheveled hair…are not hairdressing!
Cyrus Bulsara Hmmmmmm. Licenses should be withdrawn like they do for doctors!
Cyrus Bulsara There’s a whole bunch of charlatans out there, especially in NY and LA who pat each other on the backs and promote this fugly work. If you had shown me some, of this work when I was at Redken, Clairol, Logics, or Wella, I would’ve laughed! No wonder the two top companies are losing share! And hundreds of managers are being sacked! They brought this on themselves!
Frank Fowden Amen! These so called stylists have to produce this rubbish and call it high fashion because it is a complete lack of personal skill they have to disguise.
Tony Dorso You know what I miss about the old days?…..the haircut was the be-all, end-all of all things…..you could conceivably put color in the same category as right along side of it…..dont get me wrong, of course there has to be fantasy work, up-styling, etc., it just seems to me that we studied and went after the haircutting collections that someone turned out FIRST, (as the foundation of all things), and if they happened to do great up styling, etc. too, then it was an added bonus….I hope what I said makes sense…I’m just thinking back here to the way things used to be……….so much nonsense today….
Cyrus Bulsara – Some of this hair is a disaster and even the company marketing people and trade magazine editors, who are all young and new, don’t know good from fugly! I think this is one of the things holding back the industry! I think we have to take back the industry. And some of you Sassoon and other top trained Hairdressers need to start hitting back. We don’t need to name names or hurt feelings just point out and critique. (I guess I will Cyrus, who by the way is a salesman and not a hairdresser everyone)
Now of course these wonderful gentlemen will say, “We didn’t mean that”. But you did mean that or you would have said it another way. Just as I write what I right I will stand behind it. But when the light is turned on in a darkened kitchen they will scatter like roach’s. But what is said is said my friends. And one day you will pay the price for what you said. Just as I. Have some compassion my friends. Learn to lead and to motivate my friends. Basically you just do for yourself and your friends. That’s it. But Charity asks no questions my friends, it just does. Real professionals would sit back and watch and offer a hint, or ideas to a stylist. Or wait for a question from that other professional. Notice I said other professional. When you produce a marketable product and you are successful at your craft you have no problem sharing your knowledge. People who feel they need to offer unkind words are normally the ones that are insecure of their work. Know it all’s I say! Being successful is sharing your knowledge with others gladly. We are the secure people. We are seasoned professionals, the helpful. We are the Charity of the profession. We walk the walk and talk the talk! We are the kind.
I would look at this photo and say to the stylist, “What a lovely red color”. But in my industry a kind word is far away from the present. Professionals take time in creating their own style and with that their is a lot of learning and practicing. But who is to say that if you don’t mimic a Vidal Sassoon style than that is not the way to go. You will find in my industry people will break their backs to do a style that is exactly like a “VS Haircut”. Big Deal, Big Fragging Deal. Do your own thing my friends. All that time should be spent I feel on perfecting your own techniques. Not reproducing copyright work. But if you don’t pay homage to the great ones especially the ones who have not done shit in over 30 years you are not going to be anointed by the senior citizens of the industry. People who live off a dead mans name, that’s what they are. Living on the bygone days. I had a gentlemen in my first film who would charge a total of $10,000 dollars for a dry haircutting class. 10,000 I say to you, for a class. And if you look at the finished work he does it looks like he came from a dog grooming school. His work had no rhythm or reason. Horrible. Another called me and asked if I would help him with a product website, “This product will change the industry Joe”. I had talked to his money man and he asked if I would send him some examples for a web site. “Sure I said” “But you have to pay me my fee for my time sir”. These guys wanted it all for free, the proceeds from the first film “The Real Hair Truth” went to people who needed help. Such as websites, books, class’s, blogs and we did them free of charge. But this guy wanted all his shit for free, even after my friend made him a trailer for his website and I even gave him a website for free. Be careful who you align yourself with in this industry! These people were scam artists. Like the used car salesman of the beauty industry. We are in an industry that has its own PHOTOSHOP AWARD. NAHA this is a contest who can send in the best Photo shopped pictures and people will get awarded a trophy and be named, “Hairdresser of the year”. And not even be judged in a setting where they do there work in front of a group of Judges. It’s all a scam. Who can out bullshit who. Take the road less travelled my friends. You will be better off. Big your fellow hairdressers up, you may not know how hard they are struggling. Have you walked a mile in there shoes?
