Being pampered is one of the major draws of the salon experience.  However, feeling like your service was catered especially for you is priceless.  The more you know about someone, the better you can customize your services to fit their needs.  

Joseph Kellner makes some strong relevant points in Real Hair Truth.com and gives some very helpful tips for developing a rapport with a client through active listening.  Engage your customer with open-ended questions to elicit a more detailed response.  As they respond, make sure you pay attention to what they are saying.  Do not assume that you understood everything they said.  Always restate their answer to make sure there is no miscommunication.

Once you figure out your clients individual needs, you become a more effective seller of your products.  As you are doing their hair, you can explain how the products work.  By having knowledge about the product and seeing immediate results, the client is more likely to purchase the product for their personal use when they cannot make it to the salon.

Well, I feel that there are alot of stylists that don’t view what we do as a profession,rather they just perfect a few a cuts, learn one companies color line and thats it. These are the same stylists who get hung up on name brands.Its also the same stylists when working in a commision salon feel that the owner pockets the o…ther half of the income they bring into the salon.I’ve had experience with what I call prima dona stylists the ones that need everything,has to have everything, and can always do things better but never change themselves nor want to experience new things.These are the stylists manufacters bank on,they are the ones who help keep certain brands in the limelight.
I know we all at the end of the day want to make money, but I also want to know that I’m giving the best service I can. Exploring new less popular lines and trying out new techneques is what makes our profession so much fun. That also keeps our industry at a higher level. When clients can purchase the same products we use in the salon it makes our profession looked at as though it is easy and anyone can do it. I find that very embarassing. Its like doctors with all the ads for different meds. I guess the manufacters want us to right down all the meds that fit our ailments and give the doctor the list and tell him to write the scripts without any exam or diagnosis.
I couldn’t agree more about not carrying any lines that can be purchased out side a salon.
I also agree about having schools being held to higher standards.
I know I’m been going on and on.

I finally had time to sit down and watch your DVD and have alot of thoughts to share with you. It was very informative and created some questions for me also, my biggest question is how can you work in a industry, that works against you! That does not support you, …or will not help you as a entrepenaur? Good film you need to make the next film for outside the community of your industry. This was real! Let me just start out by saying that I am not in the hairstyling/beauty industry but sat down to watch this DVD with my sister who is considering it as a career. Wow, We got an entire education or should I say the TRUTH of the business, in just under two hours. Having no knowledge o…f this industry I found this to be a must for anyone considering a career in this field. My sister found the information to be so valuable in order to set up the correct game plan for her new business. I think this DVD would be just as important for everyone who is already in the industry but they have their “blinders” on. Manufacturer Loyality Is Gone!

 

I think you people are seeing the way it is. These companys do NOT CARE about brand loyality to the salon industry. Is what they are doing illegal? No. You can do anything you want with a product once you buy it. O.K! And this is there products, they can sell it anywhere. What is WRONG is the manufacturers and also Distributorships are selling out your retail space in the salon. THERE is no brand loyality ANYMORE. But YOU will sign a CONTRACT with PAUL MITCHELL so you wont divert there products! BUT they will have there products on a consistent basis to all of these store, which is not wrong at all. BUT you WILL let THEM make YOU abide by a contract, you basically wave you 1977 Free Fair Trade Right the goverment gave you! Look it up everyone. Diversion was made by the manufacturers by having you sign a CONTRACT. you sell the product you will take the blame for it being in the stores. They have created Camoflage for themselves by blaming YOU for the shelves being stocked in all the commercial sectors!

I finally smartened up and developed my own and just launched it in Oct. Our clients lov…e it ! We sell it like mad in our salon and more salon’s are starting to jump aboard.

Phil Stone yes. but then i start laughing at all the hairdressers who still rally behind the TIGI banner at hairshows and claim the company can do no wrong. then i get sad, and die a little inside. The only thing I can control 100% is what is carried in my salon. I make my own products and sell a high end italian line that uses no distributors.
