My Short Time At A Ulta Salon.

Two months ago I applied to a position at ULTA to see how the company is organized and how it treats its employees. And when I say employees I mean Hairdressers. A position was offered to me as a hairdresser from the company. And I accepted the offer and did not know how much I was to be offered, but assuming in the beauty industry it would be a low commission.  I started the first week in April as a hairdresser. ULTA provides all the tools a hairdresser needs without including shears. Shears are a personnel choice of all hairdressers. All the tools used where given to all to use since the company sells these name brand tools. You can provide what you want as long as the tools are what is being sold in the store for retail purchases to consumers. A lot of video training is provided to the stylist and a lot is expected of the stylist. Such as how to greet customers and direct them to the proper aisle to find there product they are shopping for. Mind you if you have a client in your chair you are to politely leave your client to help the consumer in the store to find there hair care needs and answer questions to them.  Also if you have a client in your chair you are to politely leave your client to answer the phone and make appointments. Which I feel professionally that is not good, especially if they are a new or returning client. There are no receptionists in the salon, but there are plenty of sales people in the store to help you with makeup and “RING UP” YOUR PURCHASES.

On my second week at the salon a employee who I worked next to had to go ahead a pick up there child at school because she was sick. A makeup appointment was then moved from her schedule to mine. I have been doing makeup for about 10 years so I thought to myself no big deal. But when the client came in she had a appointment with a stylist who also does makeup and had a full consultation on what would be used and types of color for her private. She informed me that she wanted the stylist who she originally talked to at the consultation and not me. I tried to calm her down but to no avails she did not need my services and wanted to know why the stylist she talked to was not there. I had no information for her and she then turned around and walked away. Tried to do my best I told myself. Also to let you know I had a customer in my chair while attending to this client also. So for ten minutes I had to take away from the paying customer.

She walked away and moved over to the makeup counters and soon got her service completed from a sales attendant for her function. I went back to her and gave her a managers card and asked her to call the manager if she needed to speak to someone. I also went to a store manager to explain the situation to her from my side. All seemed well. No information from my manager was given to me about the consultation she initially had, and no information on makeup color choices. NOTHING. If YOU ARE GOING TO MOVE A CLIENT FROM ONE STYLIST TO ANOTHER GIVE THEM THE CLIENT INFORMATION FROM THERE CONSULTATION. So things will run smoothly. Photo’s also help from the consultation. Later that evening when I was leaving for home another store manager came to me asking what had happened. I thought to myself who is this person nor did I know she was a store manager. Thinking to myself she must be looking for gossip I said it was none of her business. She came to me and said the other employees said I was very rude to her and would not accommodate her. That is when I noticed to myself there are a lot of chiefs here than employee’s.  I respectfully denied to answer her comments and the following day told my manager the whole situation. Nothing was ever done on the situation. Yes the salon manager had there favorites in the salon as per the industry. So you where at times pretty much left alone in the salon to clean and make appointments and play receptionist. You were not allowed to sit in your salon chair and had to sit in the back if you needed to get off your feet. Everything had to be in clear plastic bags so they could inspect when you came and also when you left the salon. I was told the meaning for the tight security of personal effects was there was a employee who would place makeup in there sandwich and leave with it. That person was using that technique to steal. I had once told a sales person on the floor she had lovely makeup and she could not even understand English. She latter told my salon manager that I was making fun of her makeup and that I would be written up. If something again came up. This is after 3 weeks mind you.

There were a few nice people to work with in the salon and you also had your “QUEEN’S” there also. I refer the them as “QUEEN’S” because there are the one’s who will smile in your face and then take all the clients that walk in. When you take a break or leave the store during or after your shift you must go to the front of the store and empty your pockets and be searched by a manager on duty to make sure you are not stealing. And it doesn’t matter if the store is busy it will be done in front of the customers. The search’s were done in front of a camera in the front of the store .Very, very embarrassing. That tells you something about the business.  I was hired as a hairdresser which meant to mean the had a position to fill in the salon. I brought some of my own clients to the salon which kept me busy for a short time but as time went on there was less and less business. I was told it would get slower because of the season. The store itself was only open for a 10 month period and not yet a year. I was told to upscale my tickets as much as possible and seen some stylists charge as much as $250.00 for a simple foil highlight. I was also told to go outside the store and bring in clients or customers. Even if that meant to stand in front of “TARGET” and give out salon business cards. To me that told me everything.  They did not have the business and wanted “YOU” a professional to go out and pretty much beg people to come in for serviced.  If a customer was walking around in the store especially in the hair product department, I was to help them find what they wanted but also at the same time “TALK” them in a conditioning treatment. Saying the product they were looking for was not as good as what the salon uses. Which was untrue we used the same products from the floor in the salon. SNEAKY!

After being asked to give out business cards in front of “TARGET” I knew this was not the place to build a clientele. That pretty much told me they were deceitful from the start and lied about the position they had for me. They had no business at all. And wanted me to beg for business. This is a old technique in the beauty industry to place on a professional and ask them, ‘Well how are you going to build a clientele, Joseph”. I told them by my work I will build a clientele. ULTA is a large corporation that can afford to advertise for there stores. But would rather go the cheap way of using the employees to do all the clientele building. If you have no business in the salon why would they hire me.  FREE LABOR!

I get paid to do hair, hair coloring, makeup etc. Not to go out and beg and lie to people to come into the salon. If you don’t have the business don’t waste peoples time. All in all if you are looking for a career in the beauty industry, I would highly recommend not going to ULTA, for any employment.  Professionals spend a lot of time in there craft and need to be respected, but in this day and age corporate business have prostituted the  beauty industry.

Charity asks no questions!

A few weeks ago I came across a dossier in one of my Facebook’s friends profile. And on this profile there was a comments left about other hair dressers work. I have been in this industry for over 29 years and by no means am I a judge or critic of someone else’s work or craft. Especially when I have to keep up my own style of hair coloring, hair design or makeup. There is no way to me for anyone to call themselves a master in the art of hairdressing when it is consistently changing and evolving.  Nor are we able to comment on anyone’s work when they are the artist. Do we know what is going through their minds, no we don’t. But on this profile the “Older generation had to put their two cents in”.  Which I think you need to watch out for in this industry the older generation will sell their souls for a chance to get up on a stage to live off the names of dead men. While in the mean time they will offer you a technique on “Dry Haircutting” and a bottle of “SUDS” and tell you it’s the latest and greatest. “It’s going to change the industry”. Those words were spoken by a man who told me he did all of Vidal Sassoon’s haircuts back in the 50″s. These are your old used cars salesmen of the industry. They will say anything to just catch a fleeting moment of their past, the “Glory Days”, while they have not done anything in the past 30 years. Other than open their wallets to receive a few penny’s from a manufacture for speaking their script.  And if you take a look at their work they are quick to “PAT” themselves on the back and tell you your shit sticks.  They have a group and will only pay you a tribute if you do a “VS” hair style. They will paint a picture of how crappie the new generation work is not up to “THERE PAR”.  They are quick to judge others. While their work still has not progressed since the 1980″s.  A wise tongue and a giving heart goes along way in the beauty industry

I do a lot of photo-shoots every month and all year-long. When I am hired, I am told how to style the hair, how to do the makeup.  That’s the story, and that is how I get paid. Kapish?

If you had shown me some, of this work when I was at Redken, Clairol, Logics, or Wella, I would’ve laughed! No wonder the two top companies are losing share! And hundreds of managers are being sacked! They brought this on themselves!

Real Hiar truth

Frank Fowden Amen! These so called stylists have to produce this rubbish and call it high fashion because it is a complete lack of personal skill they have to disguise.

Tony Dorso You know what I miss about the old days?…..the haircut was the be-all, end-all of all things…..you could conceivably put color in the same category as right along side of it…..dont get me wrong, of course there has to be fantasy work, up-styling, etc., it just seems to me that we studied and went after the haircutting collections that someone turned out FIRST, (as the foundation of all things), and if they happened to do great up styling, etc. too, then it was an added bonus….I hope what I said makes sense…I’m just thinking back here to the way things used to be……….so much nonsense today….

Cyrus Bulsara – Some of this hair is a disaster and even the company marketing people and trade magazine editors, who are all young and new, don’t know good from fugly! I think this is one of the things holding back the industry! I think we have to take back the industry. And some of you Sassoon and other top trained Hairdressers need to start hitting back. We don’t need to name names or hurt feelings just point out and critique. (I guess I will Cyrus, who by the way is a salesman and not a hairdresser everyone)

Real Hair truth

Now of course these wonderful gentlemen will say, “We didn’t mean that”. But you did mean that or you would have said it another way. Just as I write what I right I will stand behind it. But when the light is turned on in a darkened kitchen they will scatter like roach’s.  But what is said is said my friends. And one day you will pay the price for what you said. Just as I.  Have some compassion my friends. Learn to lead and to motivate my friends. Basically you just do for yourself and your friends. That’s it.  But Charity asks no questions my friends, it just does.  Real professionals would sit back and watch and offer a hint, or ideas to a stylist.  Or wait for a question from that other professional. Notice I said other professional. When you produce a marketable product and you are successful at your craft you have no problem sharing your knowledge. People who feel they need to offer unkind words are normally the ones that are insecure of their work. Know it all’s I say! Being successful is sharing your knowledge with others gladly. We are the secure people. We are seasoned professionals, the helpful. We are the Charity of the profession. We walk the walk and talk the talk! We are the kind.

I would look at this photo and say to the stylist, “What a lovely red color”.  But in my industry a kind word is far away from the present. Professionals take time in creating their own style and with that their is a lot of learning and practicing. But who is to say that if you don’t mimic a Vidal Sassoon style than that is not the way to go. You will find in my industry people will break their backs to do a style that is exactly like a “VS Haircut”. Big Deal, Big Fragging Deal. Do your own thing my friends.  All that time should be spent I feel on perfecting your own techniques. Not reproducing copyright work.  But if you don’t pay homage to the great ones especially the ones who have not done shit in over 30 years you are not going to be anointed by the senior citizens of the industry. People who live off a dead mans name, that’s what they are. Living on the bygone days.  I had a gentlemen in my first film who would charge a total of $10,000 dollars for a dry haircutting class. 10,000 I say to you, for a class. And if you look at the finished work he does it looks like he came from a dog grooming school. His work had no rhythm or reason. Horrible. Another called me and asked if I would help him with a product website, “This product will change the industry Joe”.  I had talked to his money man and he asked if I would send him some examples for a web site. “Sure I said” “But you have to pay me my fee for my time sir”. These guys wanted it all for free, the proceeds from the first film “The Real Hair Truth”  went to people who needed help. Such as websites, books, class’s, blogs and we did them free of charge. But this guy wanted all his shit for free, even after my friend made him a trailer for his website and I even gave him a website for free.  Be careful who you align yourself with in this industry! These people were scam artists. Like the used car salesman of the beauty industry.  We are in an industry that has its own PHOTOSHOP AWARD. NAHA this is a contest who can send in the best Photo shopped pictures and people will get awarded a trophy and be named, “Hairdresser of the year”. And not even be judged in a setting where they do there work in front of a group of Judges.  It’s all a scam. Who can out bullshit who. Take the road less travelled my friends. You will be better off.  Big your fellow hairdressers up, you may not know how hard they are struggling. Have you walked a mile in there shoes?

Cosmetology License Renewal Online Is A Joke!

  

 

Several Years ago the state decided to have requirements for the Cosmetologist, Mainly because of the outbreak of AIDS. And I am also sure to fill their pockets more. But the online requirements for License renewal for the Cosmetologist is a joke. This program can be picked up at Sallys Beauty Supply and the test can be taken and mailed in.  And results can be made online or the tests can be also be certified online.  But the test is given to individuals who use their hands and create daily. By all means I feel advanced education should be implemented in the yearly state requirements. But this certification is merely not helping the hairdresser, Or the full Cosmetologist it is an insult to their intelligence.  Advanced education should be required every year in my profession and I am talking about  a good five-day course at your choice advanced academy. State requirements are often vague and to simplified for the ongoing educational requirements of the Cosmetologist.  And these courses that can be done withing a few hours, and sometimes one hour should be changed. We need to improve our skills yearly and adding a training class as a requirement for yearly renewal should be required.

The laws need to be changed to allow growth within the professional and also challenge the Cosmetologist yearly on keeping a professional responsibility to upgrading their skills. The advanced academy’s should be able to certify all the licenced professionals yearly by taking a five-day course on hair coloring and also hairdressing. Along with the state test.
  
An artist should not take a written test nor should a beauty school graduate, HANDS ON SHOULD BE GIVEN. Yes a short written test should also be given on requirements, but the laws should be changed to implement a hands on approach to licensure for the graduate.
 
National  licensure should be installed to all cosmetologists, and that way it is easier for the individual to move from state to state and receive reciprocity. A lot of students completing the qualifications at their school. Would like to relocate to a different market, also the licensed Cosmetologist would like to see easier movement from state to state.
 

 

Shop Around When Going To Hairdressing School

If there is one element of the human appearance that most stands out, it’s the hair. Just think about how often you’ve heard someone describe a person by their hair color or style – it’s a common occurrence. Many people find that they have a knack for styling hair. Maybe they’ve experimented by cutting a friend’s or their child’s, and now want to turn it into a career. While part of hairdressing is talent, it takes proper hair design training to really become a proper hair stylist. I feel that schools should have a mandatory of 2500 hours in a nationwide curriculum course. State’s require to little time to be spent in school. And off they go! Take an exam and you have a license.

By attending a Cosmetology course you’ll learn the finer points of styling hair. This includes learning the current and ongoing popular trends, as well as the timeless elements of form that go into every good style. Students of hair design will also learn about proper health and maintenance of hair, which is vital to maintaining a good style. Some schools will also encourage their students to embrace their creativity and try to develop their own styles that will really wow their future clients. Schools often teach out of manuals that are not current, and the course’s should be current. When taking the exam there should be a written test but also a practical. I also feel that the License should not be given until the student completes an apprenticeship of a mandatory of one year. Then I feel the license should be given to the student.

Hair design courses vary wildly in terms of cost and how difficult they are to get admitted to. For a long time, people viewed hairdressing schools as the places that people went when they couldn’t cut it in a real college. However, it is increasingly become a more legitimate choice to enroll in cosmetology programs and learn hair design and other beauty enhancing skills. Along with that shift, many new hair design training schools have arisen. Some of these schools are highly exclusive and very expensive. Watch out for all the Private Colleges, Career Training Institutes, Vocational Schools also.

However, there are still many government sponsored programs that are designed to be inexpensive, quick and rudimentary introductions to the world of hairdressing. These programs provide students without training and knowledge to pass a certification test in their state, but little else. Those who dream of hairdressers who are known across the world – or at least in their local communities – are more likely to get the training they need at a private hair design school. Costs for the more exclusive schools can rival the costs of prominent four-year universities, while the prices for the smaller programs can be much cheaper than even community colleges.

For many people, hair design is a form of art. It be discouraging to an up-and-coming hair stylist when they discover that the hair design school they want to attend is out of the price range. Fortunately, there are many options available to help students pay their way through hair design courses. Government grants.
